American professional basketball player for the Denver Nuggets, Michael Porter Jr.’s younger brother Jontay Porter, has been banned from the NBA after his involvement in a sports betting scandal.
A league investigation found that Jontay disclosed confidential information about his health to sports bettors, limiting his own participation in one or more games for betting purposes. Jontay, the basketball center and power forward, last played for the Toronto Raptors.
According to an investigation report, Jontay is also accused of placing at least 13 bets on NBA games using an associate’s online betting account. Most of his bets were placed on the games in which he played.
However, three of the bets were multi-game parlays that included a wager on the Raptors. League commissioner Adam Silver claimed the investigation into Jontay centered on the Raptors’ loss to the Sacramento Kings.
The investigation will remain open and could produce more findings. A different person also placed an $80,000 parlay through an online sports book, betting Jontay would underperform in the game.
In the game, Jontay played for only three minutes and fell ill. This clearly indicates that Jontay limited his participation to influence the outcome of one or more bets on his performance.
The lifetime ban on Jontay Porter was announced the same morning the Nuggets were holding their first practice in preparation for the 2024 playoffs.
