Born Calvin LeBrun, Mister Cee, an American DJ, broadcaster, record executive, and radio personality, passed away on Wednesday. Skip Dillard, the brand manager at WXBK 94.7 The Block NYC, confirmed his death.
The cause of his death is still unknown. Cee was an integral figure in New York City’s booming 1990s hip-hop scene and an early champion of The Notorious B.I.G. Born on 17 August 1966 in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood; Cee grew up under the mentorship of an uncle who was a DJ.
His early influences came from the radio, listening to the hip-hop acts World Famous Supreme Team.
From gaining his first recognition in early 1990 as a radio DJ, showcasing the music of rising artists, Cee had a head-whopping career for decades. He was a hit disk jockey for more than 20 years on New York City’s commercial radio station, Hot97.
Before leaving the station in 2013 to give a musical direction to his career, he lived out the dream on Hot97. During an interview, a promoter at Capitol Musical Group, Chris Green, stated that Mister Cee was the glue between the old and new on Hot97.
At first, it was revealed that Cee had resigned from the station. But later, it was revealed he had solicited the services of transgender prostitutes. After the incident, several questions were raised about his sexuality.
Following his passing, tributes poured in from across the hip-hop community, showcasing Mister Cee’s profound impact on the genre. His influence on hip-hop culture will continue to resonate for years to come.
