The Allman Brothers Band Co-Founder Dickey Betts Dies At 80

The Allman Brothers co-founder Dickey Betts Dead

Legendary guitarist, singer, songwriter, and composer Dickey Betts, famous as a founding member of the The Allman Brothers Band, passed away after battling cancer for a year. Betts’ manager, David Spero, confirmed that Betts died at his home in Osprey, Florida.

Spero also said he was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Betts was surrounded by his family at the time of his death. They said he was not in any pain.

Forrest Richard “Dickey” Betts played a significant role in shaping the distinctive sound of The Allman Brothers Band, a group that blazed trails in Southern rock. Sharing lead guitar duties with Duane Allman, Betts contributed to the fusion of blues, country, R&B, and jazz that became the band’s trademark style.

Born on 12 December 1943 in West Palm Beach, Florida, Betts soaked up the musical influences of the region, from country to bluegrass. His journey to musical stardom took an unconventional turn when he joined a circus band on a road trip at just 16.

Betts’ path intersected with Duane Allman’s in 1969, leading to the formation of the iconic The Allman Brothers Band. Their self-titled debut album in 1969 marked the beginning of a musical journey that would redefine the boundaries of rock music.

Tragically, Duane Allman’s life was cut short by a motorcycle accident in 1971, followed by the loss of bassist Berry Oakley in a similar accident a year later. Despite these devastating losses, Betts and Gregg Allman led the band through tumultuous times marked by clashes and substance abuse.

The band’s pioneering approach to jamming and live performances set them apart in the music scene of the time. Albums like “At Fillmore East” and “Brothers and Sisters” showcased Betts’ instrumental and songwriting talents.

Betts’ departure from the band in 2000 didn’t mark the end of his musical journey. He continued to create music both solo and with his band, Great Southern.

Beyond the stage, Betts found solace in Bradenton with his wife, Donna, reflecting on a lifetime dedicated to the craft of music and the enduring influence of The Allman Brothers Band.
